The Man Who “Just Needed New Glasses”

Mr. Thomas, 58, came in requesting a prescription update. He’d noticed blurring in his left eye for a few months. Refraction didn’t improve it. Fundoscopy revealed a swollen optic disc.

I ordered imaging, which revealed a compressive pituitary macroadenoma. He underwent successful transsphenoidal resection.

The Lesson Learned

Don’t dismiss unexplained vision changes as refractive error. Rule out compressive or neurologic causes—sometimes, new glasses won’t solve it.
