The Teen With “Asthma” That Wasn’t

Riya, 14, came in with breathlessness during PE class. Her previous doctor had diagnosed asthma and started inhalers. But her symptoms didn’t respond. I noticed her breathlessness was more during speaking than exertion.

Pulmonary function tests were normal. A laryngoscopy revealed vocal cord dysfunction.

With speech therapy and counseling, her symptoms resolved.


The Lesson Learned

Not all wheezing is asthma—listen beyond the lungs. Mislabeling leads to mistreatment; investigate when therapy fails.
