Maya, 2, had been crying and clutching her stomach for hours. Her parents thought it was constipation. I did too—at first. But she was listless, her belly tender and distended.

A quick ultrasound revealed intussusception. We immediately arranged for a contrast enema, which was both diagnostic and therapeutic.

Within hours, Maya was back to her bubbly self.


The Lesson Learned

Acute abdominal pain in toddlers is never “just gas” until ruled out. Listen to your gut when the child’s doesn’t feel right.
